On the 14th of March, nine students and three teachers travelled from Loreto Community School to visit ‘IES La Creueta’, a public secondary school in Onil, Spain, as part of a Comenius project.

The project comprises 5 schools from Lithuania, Belgium, Germany, Ireland and Spain under the theme of ‘A European Passport to Employability’. The project explores employment opportunities and how to gain employment in the schools’ regions.

The students were hosted by families and spent the first evening, Saturday, eating with the family and getting to know them.

On Sunday, we visited the city of Alicante, Here we learned about the city’s traditional festival of ‘Las Hogueras’. We visited the Castle of Santa Barbara and ate traditional ‘tapas’ that evening.

On Monday and Tuesday, the students and teachers attended ‘La Creueta’ secondary school in Onil. The students from the five countries gave detailed presentations on employment in their regions, attended classes, undertook Spanish lessons, learned traditional dance, and ate a typical ‘Paella’ meal with the Spanish students. In the town of Onil, we also explored the local industries of Olive Oil Production and Doll manufacturing as well as visiting the town hall to learn about the festival of ‘Moros and Cristianos’ which is a yearly celebration of the long history between the Moors and the Christians in this region.

On the final night, the students received certificates of participation from the school and enjoyed music performed by the Spanish students followed by a disco by DJ Kava, a student from La Creueta.

The trip was extremely successful, the students especially enjoyed the opportunity to immerse themselves in Spanish life for five days, eating local cuisine, attending classes, speaking Spanish with students, teachers and parents all day long and the friendships they made with their host students.

Special thanks to Ms. Fitzsimons and Ms. Dennehy for their hard work in organising the project.
